Radiology is the medical specialty that uses medical imaging to diagnose and treat diseases within the body. "Interventional Radiology" (IR) represents the diverse range of procedures and techniques that use radiological image guidance (X-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography [CT] or magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) to precisely target therapy. Most IR procedures are minimally invasive alternatives to open and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. As many IR procedures start with passing a needle through the skin to the target it is sometimes called pinhole surgery!
IR has a huge impact in the patient management in hospital medicine.
Interventional radiologists are doctors who are trained in radiology and interventional therapy. No other specialty possesses this unique combination of skills!
The interventional radiologist is skilled in manipulation of needles and the use of fine catheter tubes and wires to navigate around the body under imaging control and eventually use his skills to target therapy.
Dr Senguttuvan Pandian is an interventional radiologist practicing IR in Chennai. He did his MBBS from Thanjavur Medical College. He did his post graduation in radiology in Kind George Medical College, Lucknow after securing 19th rank in the national level PG medical entrance examination. He gained experience in diagnostic radiology for a period of 5 years during which he also acquired the FRCR (London) degree. He was inspired by Senior Interventional Radiologist Dr Swatee Halbe to pursue a career in Interventional Radiology. He completed his Interventional radiology fellowship in the prestigious Christian Medical College (Vellore). He always thought that he was engineering material with his career and passion eventually syncing as IR which requires medicine knowledge, common sense and innovation. He is committed to serve to his best people from all walks of life.
